We’ve all been told the same story: work harder, and success will follow.

But what if that’s not true?

Last week I interviewed Mostyn Wilson. He used to be a Partner at KPMG but left it all behind to become a high-performance coach.

He told me that people at the very top don’t just work harder… they work differently.

Here are 4 strategies I noted down that top performers use:

  1. Hard work isn’t enough

“If hard work alone decided success, then the hardest working people would always win — and they don’t.”

Effort matters, but visibility, clarity, and leverage matter more. Invisible work, no matter how brilliant, doesn’t get rewarded.

  1. Design your ecosystem

“The most successful people that I know don't just work at a high level. They put themself in a high performance ecosystem.”

High performers build structures, environments, and networks that pull them upward instead of drag them down.

  1. Say no more often

“High performers get really comfortable saying no to the things that aren’t going to move the dial.”

Focus is a competitive advantage. Every “yes” to a distraction is a “no” to what really matters.

  1. Authenticity isn’t about being the same

“If you never outgrow the old version of yourself, you're not actually being authentic, you're being stagnant.”

Real authenticity isn’t about staying the same. It’s about growing into who you’re meant to be next.

Remember: success is less about pushing harder, and more about pulling the right levers:

  • Choosing the right environments

  • Making your work visible

  • Protecting your focus

That’s what separates consistent high performers from everyone else.
